The Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1964 at the dedication of the Luther Field House. Hamlet "Coach Pete" Peterson and Sigurd Reque, each a Luther graduate and teacher, coach, and athletic director at the college, were the inaugural inductees. For a decade, no other names were added to the hall's roll.
In 1974 the faculty athletic committee established procedures for inducting former Luther athletes in the Hall of Fame on a regular basis.
The Criteria for Nomination and Consideration in making selections for the Hall of Fame
- Must have been an outstanding athlete or coach at Luther College
- Must be a college graduate
- Must have graduated from college 10 or more years prior to induction year
- Must be or have been outstanding in professional life after graduation
- Must have demonstrated strong contributions to family and community life since graduation
- Nominees are considered for induction in an anniversary year (10th, 15th, 20th, ...) of their graduation
- Teams will be considered on a case-by-case basis 10 years after the event occurred
Luther also considers additional factors such as how the nominee has exemplified loyalty and service to Luther; fidelity to the ideals of Luther; service to athletics after graduation; and timeliness of the award. First ballot nominees will be considered on the 10th anniversary of their graduation.
Nominations may be made by members of the Hall of Fame committee, faculty, staff, alumni, friends of the college, and current members of the Hall of Fame.
A plaque in the Regents Center lobby displays the names of the Hall of Fame members.
