• Enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force after graduation
• During World War II he joined the Blue Eagle Squadron on the U.S. Air Force and flew 150 missions as a night fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force 
• Area director of circulation for the Des Moines Register and Tribune
