Four-year letter winner in basketball and tennis. As team captain, led basketball team to IIAC championship - 1943. All-Iowa Conference guard his junior year.  Played on NAIA National Tournament teams - 1942, 1943. Iowa Conference champion in doubles his junior year • Served in U.S. Army - 1943-46. Ordained in 1950 and served as a parish pastor and leader in youth work. Elected President of the American Lutheran Church in 1973.
