• Earned three letters in football, three in basketball and four in track
• Played offensive tackle on 1938 Iowa Conference championship team
• Served as captain on the track team 
• Two-time Iowa Conference champion in the mile
• As a sophomore, finished second in the mile and 2 mile at the conference meet
• Farmed near McCallsburg, Iowa
• Elected Secretary of Agriculture of Iowa in 1972; re-elected in 1974
