Men’s Track and Field Second at Luther Invitational

Brandon Deas breaks school record in 60m dash for second time

DECORAH, IOWA – Luther hosted the first indoor meet in the newly renovated Robert and Ann Naslund Sports and Recreation Center as they also welcomed back alumni of the programs. The men's team finished second with 105 points out of nine. Senior Brandon Deas (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Thomas B. Doherty) beat his own school record in the 60m program record for the second time this season while setting a facility record. It's the first time in Luther history that an ahtlete has run under 7 seconds in the 60m dash. 
 
ETCHING THEIR MARK
In field events, Tancrede Lefort (Golbey, France/ St. Joseph) finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 5.78m.
 
In the running events, Kurt Lebakken (Edina, Minn. / Edina), Elijah Shubatt (Dubuque, Iowa / Wahlert Catholic) and Charlie Anderson (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) finished third, fourth and fifth in the 2000m steeplechase in an event that is quite rare for indoor track. Tom Altier (Granger, Iowa / Johnston) finished first in the mile with a time of 4:18.38. Brandon Deas (Colorado Springs, Colo./ Thomas B. Doherty) set not only a new career personal best but also a facility record, in the 60m dash with a time of 6.98 seconds in finals for a first-place finish. While teammate Danny Zewou (Chaska, Minn. / Chaska) finished fourth with a time of 7.25 seconds.
 
In the 400m dash Tinashe Chisora (Harere, Zimbabwe / UWC-Waterford Kamhlaba) finished third with a time of 53.02 seconds. Luther took six of the eight scoring times in the 1000-meter run with Ian Kelly (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage) finishing first, Benjamin Gillikin (Chester, N.J. / West Morris Central) second, Leo Duffy (Rockford, Minn. / Rockford) fourth, Ike Taylor (Iowa City, Iowa / Iowa City West) fifth, Lane Schwarz (Le Suer, Minn. / Le Suer-Henderson) sixth, and Will Ode (Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) seventh. Deas was also second in the 200m dash with a time of 23.29 while teammate Tancrede Lefort was sixth with a time of 24.48.
 
In the 3000-meter run Malachi Thompson (Johnston, Iowa / Johnston) and Matthew Binsfled (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) finished seventh and eighth respectively. The 4x400 relay team made of Chisora, Duffy, Sorley Swanstorm-Arnold (Mellen, Wis. / Washburn) and Benjamin Gillikin was third with time of 3:35.08.

The track and field team travels to compete at the Meet of Hearts on Saturday, February 11th in Northfield, Minnesota hosted by Carleton. Events begin at 11:00 a.m. CT.
