Clayton McDonough Crowned 165 Champion at Pointer Open

The Luther College wrestling team kicked-off its 2025-26 schedule at the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Open this afternoon. There were no team scores. The Norse had a solid day producing five place winners in both the Gold and Silver Divisions. 

Clayton McDonough (165), a two-time All-American at 157, highlighted the Norse efforts with a first place finish. McDonough, ranked 5th in the first NWCA National Poll, defeated Paolo Salminen of Minnesota State Mankato by major decision (12-4) in the title match. 

Bryce McDonough (174), entered the opening weekend ranked 14th. He placed second after being defeated by Drake Hayward of Minnesota State Mankato (6-4) in the title bout.

Peter Hollingshead (157) placed fourth, Ryan Muslimovic (165) was the consolation champion, and Patrick Gugala-Reinders (125) was the consolation runner-up.

In the Siver Division, Gian Ortiz (125) and Ben Helminski (197) both placed third. Lian Castro (149) placed fourth, Ethan Peper (285) placed sixth, and Brayden Woods (174) placed eighth.

The Norse will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 8, when they will travel to Plymouth, Wis., for the Lakeland University Muskie Scramble. Start time is slated for 10 a.m.
