Norse Come From Behind to Defeat Loras 10-9 in 11 Innings

Box Score Luther hosted Loras College for game number one of this three-game series this afternoon in the valley. The Norse came from behind to post a 10-9 victory in 11 innings.

After seven complete, Luther held what looked like a comfortable 7-3 lead. In the top of the eighth, Loras scored six runs on four hits and had some help with two errors by the Norse. With two outs and the scored tied 7-7, a misplayed very high pop up just outside of the infield, for what would have been the third out, allowed the Duhawks to score two more runs and take a 9-7 lead.

Joshua Matanich, who was 2-for-4, drove in Gavin Scurr in the bottom of the eighth, with a single to pull the Norse to within one 9-8. Scurr reach base with a two out double to center field.

In the ninth, the Duhawks commited an error that led to a run scored by Peyton Lindmark with two outs, that sent the game into extra frames.

The 10th and 11th innings saw both teams make some remarkable defensive plays. After going down in order in the top of the 10th, Loras center fielder Max McCallum robbed Mark Prince of an extra base hit that was headed to left-center field fence with a diving catch. The very next batter, Matanich sent a rocket to deep right field that was caught at the fence by Nick Dibenedetto who was diving to his left. Cullen Stamp also provided web gem in the top of the 11th, diving to catch a hard hit ball by the Duhawks Trevor Segraves, that was headed to deep left-center field.

In the bottom of the 11th, Anthony Esposito, who had taken over the pitching duties, started the inning with a single and advanced to second thanks to an error. Lindmark laid down a sacrifice bunt, that was thrown over the first baseman's head by Duhawk hurler Andrew Krause, that allowed Esposito to score the winning run.

The Norse tallied 12 hits. Scurr was 3-for-6, while Noah Kindem also had a multiple hit game going 2-for-3. Prince, Matanich, Kindem, Noah Dutler and Lindmark were all credited with an rbi.

Espositon (1-0) was credited with the win. he threw 1 1/3 innings, allowed just one hit and struck out three.

The victory gives Luther an A-R-C record of 3-3, 14-7 overall. Loras fell to 1-1 in league play, 12-6 overall.

These two teams will wrap up the series with a double header tomorrow. Game one will begin at Noon.
