Norse Sweep Duhawks in Dubuque - Improve to 20-7

The Luther College baseball team improved to 20-7 after sweeping the Loras College Duhawks tonight at Petrakis Park in Dubuque. The Norse won game one 21-0 in seven innings and went on to win the nightcap 6-5 in 10 innings. The Norse sit atop the America Rivers Conference with a record of 10-3, with Coe College (9-3) and Simpson (6-3) and close second and third.

The 21 runs is the most scored by a Bryan Nikkle team, but is not the most scored by a Luther team. That distinction goes to the 1898 squad that defeated St. Olaf College 32-2. The largest shutout victory over an Iowa Conference/A-R-C opponent is 22-0 over Wartburg on April 30, 1974. The largest shutout victory in school history was a 23-0 decision over Lennox in 1903.

In game one, the Norse had 17 hits, with nine of them coming in the 11 run second inning. Seventeen batters went to the plate in this frame that ended with the bases loaded. The Norse went on to score three more in both the fifth and seventh and four in the sixth.

Jack Dornack hit a three-run home run in the second and Hayden Torgerson did the same in the seventh. Xavier Millan hist a two-run home run in the fifth. Zach Gwost, Ty Grewal, Tyrus Werner and Ryan Truman all had doubles and Truman also had a triple. Truman, Torgerson and Dormack all had four rbi, while Millan, Gwost and Werner had two.

Nolan Klocke (4-0) had a complete game shutout. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out 11.
Box Score

In game two, Torgerson lead off the 10th with a single to left field. Walker Bennett pinch ran for Torgerson and advanced to second on a 5-3 sac by Ty Grewal. Two batters later, Truman hit a single to center field that scored Bennett, in what proved to be the game winner. Grewal led the Norse with two rbi. Ike Swanson, Millan, Gwost and Truman all drove in one run.

The Norse jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, added a run in the second and one in the sixth. The Duhawks leveled the score to 5-5 scoring twice in the second, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth.

CJ Boudreaux (2-0) picked up the win striking out four of the six batters he faced in the final two innings of the game.
