Norse Split With Saints - Coach Hartl Records 600th Career Win

For the second time in as many days Luther played a double header at the Rochester Regional Dome. This afternoon the Norse faced the Saints of the College of St. Scholastica. The teams split this non-conference double header with Luther winning game one 8-0 in five innings and St. Scholastica winning the night cap 10-6.

In game one, timely hitting and a solid defensive effort secured the five inning victory. The Norse produced double plays in the first, second and fourth frames that got them out of jams. Morgan Hogenson also made a diving catch down the right field line in the fifth, that was followed by two of Kendra Cooper's six strike outs that ended the Saints at-bats.

The Norse scored three runs in the third and fourth innings and added two in the fifth. The final run was produced on a double steal of second by Katie Brennan and home plate by Hannah Halverson.

Sydney Schultz led an offensive attack that tallied 12 hits. Schultz was 3-for-3 and drove in one run. Brennan and Hoganson both had multiple hits going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively. Emily Versnik drove in two runs, while Elsa Skeie, Abby Spore, Belle Berg and Halverson all drove in one.

Cooper allowed four hits and struck out six en route to her third win of the year.

The victory was also a mile stone for Head Coach Renae Hartl as it was her 600th career victory.

Box Score

In the night cap, Luther struggled defensively, committing six errors that led to six unearned runs. The Saints scored in every inning but two and posted a 10-6 victory. Luther scored one in the second, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Schultz continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-4 and drove in two RBI. She led off the sixth inning with a solo blast over the center field fence, her first of the year. Brennan was 2-for-5 in the lead-off slot and Halverson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Berg, Anna Forari and Leah Crown all drove in one run each.

The tandem of Abbey Gapinski and Sam Thompson allowed 13 hits and struck out six. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

The split gives Luther an overall record of 4-2. St. Scholastica improved to 7-1.

Luther returns to the Rochester Dome next weekend. The Norse will play the University of Northwestern (MN) on Saturday, March 6 at Noon. On Sunday, March 7 they face St. Mary's University (MN) with a start time of 4:00 p.m. Both dates are non-conference double headers.
