DECORAH, Iowa – The Luther men's soccer team was defeated by no. 1 nationally ranked St. Olaf by a final score of 3-1. Joseph Mulinda opened up the scoring in the 16
th minute for his first goal of the season. But then the Oles scored three straight goals to secure the win. Luther is now 2-2-1 overall.
In the first half, Mulinda put the Norse on the board in the 16
th minute with a strike into the back of the net. However, in the 25
th minute, the Oles tied the game with a header goal. The two teams went into halftime scoreless.
The game remained tied until the 78
th minute when St. Olaf pulled out in front for the first time in the contest once again from the corner flag on the set piece. Three minutes later
Ignacio Duenas made a move around the defender slipping the ball ahead for Nels Moretneson. He took the ball up the field towards the box and crossed it to
Zein Mwakitawa who headed it towards goal but the St. Olaf goalie was able to make the save. Then in the 84
th minute, the Oles scored their third goal on the night.
Luther is one of three teams that have scored against St. Olaf this season. The other two were Central College and Bethany Lutheran College.
St. Olaf improves to 8-0 overall and is ranked no. 1 by the United Soccer Coaches Association.
On Saturday, Sept. 26 Luther hosts Illinois College for a Midwest Conference match-up at 11 a.m.
