Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Luther Defeats Gustavus Adolphus 3-1

ST. PETER, Minn. – The no. 25 Luther men's soccer team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College by a score of 3-1. It marked the first win over the Gusties since 2018 (3-0) and for the first time in St. Peter since 2017 (2-1). The Norse had three different goal scorers in the contest including Theo Cornell, Adrian Stauffer, and Francesco Mungari. Luther is now 1-1-1 overall.

The Gusties had a 1-0 lead after Joe Flory scored in the 15th minute. Ten minutes later, a shot taken by Mungari inside the box was blocked and bounced towards the top of the 18-yard box. Cornell collected the ball with one touch launching it into the back of the net to tie the game (1-1). It was 1-1 as the teams went to break.

In the second half, Luther claimed the lead in the 54th minute when Mungari threaded the ball to Stauffer who took the ball and beat the goalkeeper for an easy shot into the goal (2-0). Three minutes later, the Norse doubled their lead. This time it was Mungari who dribbled around the defenders the fired a shot from the top of the box. Nels Mortenson was credited with an assist on the goal.

Cornell and Stauffer tallied their first career goals in the 3-1 win.

Both teams were nearly dead even on shots with Gustavus Adolphus edging Luther 13-12. The Gusties drop to 1-2-1 overall on the season.

The next game for the Norse is at St. Mary's (MN) on Monday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in Winona, Minn. This is a game that was rescheduled from Sept. 1.
