Luther Volleyball Starts Raider Invite 1-1

MILWAUKEE, Wis.- The Luther Volleyball team completed day one of the Raider Invite splitting their first two matches 1-1. They took on the Eagles of Benedictine University and lost 0-3 (16-25, 20-25, 22-25) and then finished off the day battling through to a win against the Greyhounds of Morvian University 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 15-11).

 

The Raider Invite features 10 teams, host MSOE, Loras, Benedictine, Moravian, Knox, Carroll, Luther, Dominican, Marian, and Grinnell.

 

Game 1: Luther 0, Benedictine 3 

The Norse were swept by the Eagles in straight sets. Benedictine took to the net hitting an average of 0.187 compared to Luther's 0.055. The Norse offense was led by Ruby Gerhard and her 9 kills followed by Avery Amsden's 7 and Lindsay Hanson recorded 4 aces. Iris Elias was the match leader in both assists and digs having 23 assists and 14 digs followed by Victoria Gomez having 12 digs and Hanson recording 11.

 

Game 2: Luther 3, Moravian 2

The Norse ended the day in a battle with the Greyhounds and came out on top. After dropping the first set, Luther took control at the net and covered on defense. In the fourth set, the Norse dominated the net putting up 15 kills and a 0.316 hitting percentage, outweighing Moravian's 5 kills and 0.03 percentage. That energy carried over and helped them shutout the Greyhounds in the fifth. 

Leading in kills for the Norse was Ruby Gerhard with 16, followed by Lisa Schiltgen with 14 and Avery Amsden with 7. Our ace leaders on the night were Ella Goodnight and Abi Houston each with 4 gaining key points behind the service line when Luther needed them most. The front runner of the Norse offense, Iris Elias put up 42 assists in the match helping increase that hitting percentage as the match went on. Finally, backing up the defense was Houston with 16 digs, Gerhard with 12, and Goodnight with 7.

 

Luther volleyball will close out the Raider Invite in Milwaukee on Saturday Sept. 12th with two matches. The Norse will take on the Raiders of MSOE at 10 a.m. and the Carroll Pioneers at noon.
