Luther Splits with Bethany Lutheran in Mankato

Luther traveled to Mankato, Minn., for a non-conference double header against host Bethany Lutheran College. The Norse split with the Vikings winning game one 11-7 and dropping game two 10-0 in eight innings. With the split the Norse are now 4-9 overall.

In game one, the Norse tallied 11 runs on 13 hits. Josh Matanich continued to swing a hot bat driving in four runs after going 3-for-4 at the plate that included a three-run home run in the first. Multiple hits were also produced by Ryan Truman (2) , Garren Heinert (2), Tyrus Werner (2), and Will Heithoff (2). Gavin Scurr drove in two runs that included a solo shot in the eighth.

Kaleb Thiesse (2-0) was credited with the win. He threw 5 2/3 innings, allowed four runs on 11 hits and struck out four.

In the nightcap, Viking starter Adryen Tietz threw a four-hit shutout, striking out 13 of the 28 batters her faced. The Vikings ended this game one inning early after scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.

Heinert had two hits, while Truman, and Werner each had one.

Luther begins American Rivers Conference action next weekend at Buena Vista University. The Norse will start the three-game series in Storm Lake, Iowa with a single game on Friday, March 21 that begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, the double header will begin at 1 p.m.
