NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Luther men's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament after defeating Lake Forest College 4-1.
Enzo Mitidieri scored the game winning goal off his header in the 30
th minute.
Francesco Mungari recorded his first career hat trick. The Norse improve to 10-2-7 overall.
The Foresters scored early just 9:27 into the contest with a goal from Chad Endozo but 18 seconds later Mungari tapped in the equalizer over the goalkeeper (1-1). Later in the first half,
Ignacio Duenas crossed the ball in over the defenders where Mitidieri knocked it into the back of the net with his header making it a 2-1 advantage for the Norse in the 30th minute. That scoreline held as the teams headed into the break.
Although the shots favored the Foresters 9-6 in the second half, Mungari was able to add in two more goals adding extra insurance for the Norse in the 54
th and 72
nd minute.
Lake Forest had only given up one goal in the first half all season and nine goals allowed during the regular season. Luther not only scored two goals in the first half but four throughout the contest for the most conceded goals by the Foresters all season. Lake Forest finishes their season with a 19-2-0 overall record.
Next season Luther and Lake Forest will meet as conference opponents in the Midwest Conference.
Luther will take on St. Olaf (17-2-3) on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. in Northfield, Minn. at Rolf Mellby Field for the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It will mark the third time the two teams have met in the NCAA tournament and the first since 2011.
