Norse Defeat Ravens 9-6 - Raul Medrano III Scores Game Winning Touchdown

The Luther College football team came-from-behind to defeat Anderson University (Indiana) by a final of 9-6. The final was the first non-conference victory for the Norse since a 44-20 win over St. Olaf College on Sept. 9, 2017.

Following a scoreless first half, a Luther turnover, its only turnover of the game, led to a 6-0 advantage for Anderson. A Brett Liljedahl pass was interception by Ravens corner back Zaire Prioleau at the Luther 40 and returned to the Norse two-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Zac Montgomery connected with Deitric Johnson on a five-yard strike in the middle of the end zone.

Luther's very next possession was a three-and-out setting up perhaps the play-of-the game, that started a 9-0 run for the home team. Liljedahl posted a 60-yard punt from the Norse 39 that went out of bounds, pinning the Ravens on their own one-yard line. The Norse defensive unit held the Ravens forcing a punt. The Ravens chose not to punt and took the safety that pulled the Norse to within four points with 12:42 remaining in the game.

Following the safety, the Ravens chose to kick-off and Luther started what proved to be the game winning drive on their own 41. Liljedahl's first pass attempt was broken-up by a Raven defender, who added a bit of celebratory action and was given an unsportsmanlike penalty that moved the ball to the Anderson 44. Four plays later, Liljedahl threw a pass to the left to Raul Medrano III who raced 27-yards to the end zone. The Sean Medcalfe extra-point was good and Luther led 9-6 with just under 11 minutes left in the game.

Medrano's touchdown was his first of the year. He led the receiving corp with five receptions for 51 yards. Nick Gonzalez was next with five catches for 45 yards.

Liljedahl finished the afternoon 14-of-29 for 154 yards and connected with five different receivers.

Defensively, Luther held Anderson to 272 yards of total offense. Geremiah Brown and William Whalen led the team with eight tackles each. Danny Milllner and Tyler Ragan were next with seven, while Jermarion Williams was credited with six. Ragan was credited with a fumble recovery and Isac Rendon posted the only sack of the afternoon.

Next week, Luther resumes American Rivers Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the University of Dubuque. Start time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
