DECORAH, Iowa - The Luther Baseball team fell to Coe 4-2. It was a tight game throughout as both teams struggled to find ground with the first runs of the game not coming until the fifth inning. In the end the Kohawks got the tying run in the top of the eighth before grabbing the winning run in the top of the ninth. With the loss Luther drops to 19-11 overall and 12-3 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C).
TIGHT GAME THROUGHOUT
Snow may have covered the ground yesterday but it did wonders for the field turning the grass a vibrant green. The Norse returned home for the single early week game against the Kohawks. Luther got the game's first hit in the first at bat but both teams were held scoreless through four complete innings.
Top of the fifth, Coe would get the first run breaking the stalemate as a single and a sac moved the runner over to second. Then the single that was driven into left field gave the Kohawks their first lead. But the Norse would respond as
Will Heithoff (Winterset, Iowa / Winterset) reached on an error by the second baseman then quickly stole second.
Peyton Lindmark (Bettendorf, Iowa / Pleasant Valley) found the gap in left field for an RBI single to tie the game. Luther kept working as
Noah Sebben (Moline, Ill. / Moline) swung the ball into right field moving Lindmark to third.
Aiden Michna (Moline, Ill. / Moline) grounded out but earned an RBI for bringing Lindmark home for the 2-0 lead.
As the game progressed the were pitching changes abound as both teams were trying to conserve pitchers for the upcoming weekend series. In the top of the eighth Coe equaled the game at two from a double that was hit deep back near the wall in center field.
Kaleb Thiesse (Kasson, Minn. / Kasson-Mantorville) closed down the inning with a line out and strikeout. Luther didn't have an answer in the bottom of the eighth so it was all down to the final inning.
Top of the ninth, Luther had two outs on Coe but loaded the bases on an intentional walk thinking that they could get the next batter down on strikes. However, the Kohawks scored the game winning run off a hit by pitch which was followed by a walk bringing it to a 4-2 advantage.
Luther tried to rally with two outs in their final chance. They had two runners on with a hit by pitch and walk. But after the pitching change by the Kohawks the Norse couldn't find the answer to bring home the runners on. Luther now drops their third game in a row in A-R-C but look to bounce back when they travel to Buena Vista for the three-game series this weekend. As they are now 19-11 overall and 12-3 in A-R-C.
