Volleyball Survives Five Set Thriller with Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, TEXAS - The Luther volleyball team defeated Concordia Texas 3-2 (27-25, 25-13, 14-25, 22-25, 17-15) to wrap up their trip to Texas on Sunday. Sarina Stortz hit .393 in the contest tallying 26 kills for a season high. Luther improved to 7-16 overall and 1-4 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C).

During the first set Concordia Texas had the lead at 22-17. Luther rallied back late in the set as the host team inched closer winning. The Norse prevented the first set point opportunity by the Tornados and later they had their own set point at 25-24. This time Concordia Texas forced another win by two situation. An error by the Tornados gave Olson-Sola the serve. She ended the first set on an ace for the 27-25 win.

The Norse dominated the second set with hot hands from the hitters who held a .385 hitting percentage. Just one error in the entire set.

The Tornados won the third and fourth sets 25-14 and 25-22 forcing a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, the Norse held a 9-4 lead. Then the Tornados swirled from behind to take a 12-9 lead. Luther ended the run and two points later the set was tied at 12. Kills from Kowalczyk and Stortz put the Norse at match point but Concordia Texas grabbed a point of their own. Then the two teams were tied again at 15 but kills from Stortz and Emily Hagen helped win the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.

QUOTE FROM COACH
"Winning any game in five is something to be proud of, and we are proud of the finish today. Our middles contributed in a large way this weekend, both hitting above .400 at some point with 50 plus attempts respectively. They took the team on their back throughout the weekend and it was incredible to watch! We're looking forward to the rest of our time in Texas with a win under our belt, and getting back home for more conference play this weekend."
