Norse earn sixth place finish at Augsburg Fall Invite

Jay Fjelstul leads Luther with a two-day score of 147 (+3)

HAM LIKE, Minn.
 – Conditions were perfect for the Luther College men's golf team when it opened the 2022-23 season at the Augsburg Fall Invite. The sun was shining and the course in Ham Lake, Minnesota was perfectly manicured. The golf was also decent. After shooting a team score of 309 on Saturday, Luther's five-some shot 304 on Sunday, finishing the tournament  in sixth place with a two-day score of 613. Jay Fjelstul (Decorah, Iowa / Decorah) was the top golfer on the course for the Norse, finishing with a two-day score of 147 (+3)

DAY ONE RECAP

With six golfers on the course, Luther put together a strong showing on the opening day of competition, finishing in a two-way tie for sixth with a score of 309. Fjelstul led the charge for the Norse. As the team's No. 1 golfer, the junior shot 73 on the first day of the tournament, finishing in the top-10 with a score of 73. He was following in the rankings by No. 3 golfer Hogan Reuter (Farmington, Minn. / Farmington), who shot an opening round 76 in his season debut. 

No. 5 golfer Chris O'Brien (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) posted the third lowest score Saturday afternoon, posting a 78 on the first day of competition, while Mark Devlin (Cookstown, Northern Ireland / Cookstown) shot 82 on day one. No. 2 Brandon Dorans (Hoffman Estates, ill. / Barrington) rounded out the Norse line up, as he closed Saturday with an opening round score of 84. 

Haakon Rustad (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield) was the final student-athlete from Luther competing in the Augsburg Fall Invite. As an individual, the junior shot an opening round 75 to finish in the top-25 after day one. 

DAY ONE RECAP

The Norse shaved five strokes off their opening day score on the second day of competition, shooting an impressive 304 to secure their sixth place finish as a team. Fjelstul, the lone individual to finish in the top-5, secured a fourth place finish with a second round score of 74, bringing his two-day total to 147. 

Reuter and Rustad both finished in the top-25 as individuals. Reuter once again shot 76 on the second day of competition, closing the tournament with a two-day score of 152, good enough for 17th place in the tournament. Rustad also carded a top-25 score, as he shot 78 on the second to finish in 22nd place with a two-day score of 153. O'Brien just missed a top-25 finish, as he finished in 32nd with a two-day score of 156. 

Both Dorans and Devlin shaved strokes off their first round score. After shooting 84 in the opening round, Dorans dropped eight strokes off his day two score, shooting a second round 76 to finish the tournament with a two-day score of 160. Devlin dropped a stroke, shooting 81 on day two to finish with a two-day score of 163. 

TOP NORSE

  • Jay Fjelstul (Decorah, Iowa / Decorah) finished as the Norse's top golfer on the course, earning a fourth place finish with a two-day score of 147 (+3)
  • Hogan Reuter (Farmington, Minn. / Farmington) finished in a four-way tie for 17th thanks to his two-day score of 152 (+8). Haakon Rustad (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield) finished a stroke behind in a tie for 22nd place at +9.

Luther will once again hit the road for Minnesota, as the team is set to compete at Bethel University's Minnesota Golf Classic September 10-11 in Maple Plain, Minnesota.
