The Luther baseball team remained alive on the backside of the American Rivers Conference double elimination baseball tournament after defeating Nebraska Wesleyan University 5-3 late tonight. The Norse are facing elimination every game they play after dropping their opening game to Coe College 3-0 earlier today.
The Norse scored all of their runs in three innings to secure tonight's victory.
Charlie Rubendall and
Mark Prince were each credited with an rbi in the fifth to get things going. Josh Matanich led-off the fifth with a single and Rubendall followed with a triple. Prince then drove in Rubendall with a single to left field.
In the very next frame, Matanich hit a two-out double and Rubendall then drove in Matanich with a single to center field.
In the seventh,
Peyton Lindmark and
Luke Plunkett were credited with sac flies that scored
Joe Jersak and
Cullen Stamp who both reach safely with back-to-back singles.
Tyler Boesel (5-4) threw eight complete en route to the win on the mound. Boesel allowed three runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out 12.
Collin Chalmers picked up his fifth save of the year striking out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth.
Luther will now face the top seed of the tournament Buena Vista University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Beavers were defeated by Coe earlier today by a final of 13-2. The winner of this game will immediately play Wartburg College at 4 p.m. Both of these games are elimination contests.
