Luther and Hamline University split today's non-conference double header played at the Pipers home ball park CHS Field. The Pipers won game one 6-0 and the Norse won the nightcap 16-0 in seven innings.
In game one, five Piper pitchers combined to toss a four-hit shutout. The Pipers scored two in both the second and third innings and one in both the fifth and six frames.
Joshua Matanich had two of Luther's four hits going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Ryan Manternach (3-1) was credited with his first loss of the season. Manternach pitched three innings, allowed four runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two.
In the nightcap the Norse bats came alive. Thanks to 17 hits, the Norse scored seven runs in the first, one in the second, two in both the third and six innings and had four runs in the fifth. Seven of the Norse runs were unearned as the Pipers committed three errors.
Luke Plunkett led the Norse attack with a 5-for-5 performance at the plate. Plunkett drove in two runs and scored four times.
Cullen Stamp also scored four times and was 2-for-2 in the lead-off spot.
Gavin Scurr drove in three runs, while
Mark Prince and
Will Heithoff both drove in two.
Charlie Rubendall, Matanich,
Noah Pinette and
Joe Jersak all dove in one.
Nick Dufoe (1-0) picked up his first win of the season on the mound. Dufoe faced 22 batters and allowed four hits, all singles.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 13-9.
The Norse will return to conference play on Monday afternoon, April 11 when they will travel to Wartburg College for a single nine inning game. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
