DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Luther College football team has found plenty of success on the road in 2022. Coming off a bye week, the Norse headed to the University of Dubuque for their return to American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play. Luther was unable to return to Decorah with a win, as the Norse fell to the Spartans by a final score of 68-7 Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Luther's overall record now stands at 1-6 and the team is 1-4 in A-R-C play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Dubuque wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first quarter, as the Spartans scored the first points of the game with 12:57 on the clock. A three-play, 48 yard drive resulted in a 7-0 Dubuque lead, but it was the only points the Norse defense would surrender in the first quarter. In fact, in the first quarter, Luther's defense forced three Spartan punts and a turnover on downs, giving the Norse offense plenty of opportunity to tie and take the lead. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to take advantage of the opportunities, resulting in a 7-0 Dubuque lead at the end of the first quarter.
Again, the Norse defense held the Spartans offense at bay for most of the second quarter, but Dubuque eventually found the end zone around the six-minute mark, extending its lead to 14-0. This time, Luther responded with a touchdown of its own, as Beau Cornwell (Iowa City, Iowa / West Branch) led a 73-yard drive, which resulted in a 38-yard touchdown reception by Andre Atkins (East Palo Alto, Calif. / Junipero Serra). Joseph Mehlhorn (Farmington, Minn. / Farmington) converted on the extra point attempt, helping the Norse cut the lead to 14-7 with 3:44 remaining in the second quarter.
It looked like Luther was headed to the locker room down by only a touchdown at the half. However, the Spartans scored one final time with 57 seconds remaining on the clock, as Torre Butts Jr. broke free from his defender to extend Dubuque's lead to 21-7 at the half. This time around, the Norse were unable to respond. Despite a valiant effort, Luther was outscored 47-0 in the second half, resulting in the 68-7 final score.
