Luther and Cornell College (IA) traveled to Normal, Ill., and Corn Crib Stadium for the season opening double header for both clubs. Today's game marked the first game for the Norse since March 8, 2020 when the Norse defeated Bethany Lutheran 9-4 in Tucson, Ariz. Immediately after this game the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even though it was the first game in nearly a year, the Norse bats exploded for 15 hits that led to a 12-3 victory over the Rams. Luther scored three runs in the first, six in the fourth and one each in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.
Owen Vander Linden led the attack going 2-for-4 and driving in a game high three RBI. Vander Linden drove in a run in the first on a single and hit a two-run home run to left field in the fourth.
Luke Plunkett and
Kelby Johnson also had multiple hit games. Plunkett was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Johnson was 2-for-5 with one RBI, a solo shot to left field in the sixth.
Cullen Stamp drove in two runs on a double to left in the fourth, and
Kyle Schnobrich drove in two runs in the first on a double to right-center field.
Matt Karnes and
Peyton Lindmark were also credited with an RBI.
Tyler Boesel who was handed the opening game ball, pitched five innings, allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three en route to the win.
