Luther and the University of Dubuque wrapped up their American Rivers Conference four-game series this afternoon. In the first game of this twin bill, Luther found itself down 9-4 entering the bottom of the sixth and tied the game 9-9 with a five-run frame. In the eighth, the first extra inning of this scheduled seven inning contest, Luther loaded the bases and
Joshua Matanich hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to left field that scored
Luke Plunkett, that secured the 10-9 come-from-behind victory.
In the five-run sixth, the Norse took advantage of Spartan pitching mistakes. Following a line-out to shortstop by
Charlie Rubendall to start the inning,
Jayden Kies and
Peyton Lindmark reached base after being hit by pitch.
Kelby Johnson followed with a double to left field that scored Kies. The Spartans made a pitching change and
Luke Plunkett welcome the new thrower with a double to left center field that scored both Lindmark and Johnson.
Owen Vander Linden was then hit by a pitch that was followed by a single off the bat of Kyle Schnorich that loaded the bases.
Joe McKibben reached on an error that scored Plunkett. This was fololwed by a passed ball that allowed Vander Linden to score to finish the frame tied at 9-9.
Plunkett led the Norse offensive attack that produced 10 hits. Plunkett was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Rubendall also had a multiple hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate. Johnson, Vander Linden, Matanich and Kies were all credited with an RBI.
Collin Chalmers who threw the final two innings was credited with the victory. Chalmers allowed one hit, struck out four of the seven batters he faced and walked two.
Nick Dufoe got the start and went 4 1/3 innings. Ross HIngst followed Dufor and worked 1 2/3 innings.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 7-4, 3-0 in the A-R-C, Dubuque lost its fourth game in a row and is now 3-9, 3-4 in league play.
