MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Luther softball swept their first doubleheader series of the season winning both games against Cornell College 11-4. The Norse out hit the Rams 29-16 and improved to 7-5 overall.
Game 1: Luther 11, Cornell 4
It was a 2-2 tie after one inning. Luther took over the lead for good in the top of the second adding three runs. Later in the bottom of the fourth with two outs the Rams pulled within one (5-4) but the Norse defense ended the threat. Luther also added three runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Sauser was 4-5 at the plate with two runs and two rbi.
Raven Allen was 3-5 with two doubles, two runs and two rbi.
Jerrianne Dannenmueller also had two rbi.
Olivia Engler pitched her third complete game of the season giving up eight hits and four runs. She struck out three and walked two in 32 batters faced and improved her record to 4-4 on the season.
Game 2: Luther 11, Cornell 4
After three innings Luther had a 9-0 advantage. Cornell added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth but the Norse added two more in the top of the seventh.
Alexa Stevermer picked up her third win in the circle on the season allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Madi Elwood was 3-4 as the designated player leading team with three rbi and one run. Eight players were credited with rbi including
Avery Nehring, Sauser, Elwood,
Jayla Harter,
Evie Strigel,
Mya Larsen,
Chloe Wagner and
Jordan Torrez. Sauser and Larsen both recorded a triple for the first two Norse triples this season.
