Norse - Vikings Split Double Header at Thomas Park

Luther traveled to Mankato, Minn., and Thomas Park for a double header against non-conference opponent Bethany Lutheran. In what turned out to be a pitchers dual for both games, the Vikings won game one 1-0 and the Norse won game two 2-1.

In game one, Olivia Engler (3-4) went the distance allowing one run on six hits, did not issue a walk and struck out five. Three of the Vikings hits came in the bottom of the second that led to the only run of the ball game.

On the flip-side, Vikings pitcher Emily Meyer tossed a two-hit shutout, walked two and also struck out five. Raven Allen and Madi Elwood each had a hit for the Norse.

Box Score

In the nightcap, trailing 1-0 entering the top of the seventh, the Norse were able to put together a pair of hits that led to two runs, to secure the come-from-behind victory. Freshman right fielder Mya Larsen got things started with an infield single to shortstop. Freshman pinch hitter Jayla Harter drove in Larsen with a double to left field. Allen drove in what proved to be the game winner with a shot to shortstop, that was misplayed, that allowed pinch runner Kari Welter to score.

Alexa Stevermer (2-0) was credited with the win. Stevermer threw six full innings, allowed one run on four hits, did not issue a walk and struck out four. Engler was credited with the save, retiring three of the four Vikings she faced, after taking over for Stevermer in the seventh following a lead-off double. Allen secured the victory throwing out a Viking runner who was attempting to score the tying run from third, with a bullet from her shortstop position to catcher Jordan Torezz.

Meyer (8-5) was credited with the loss allowing two runs on four hits. She walked two and struck out two.

Box Score

With the split, Luther is now 5-5 overall. The Norse return to action on Tuesday, March 18 at Cornell College. The double header in Mount Vernon, Iowa will begin at 4 p.m.
