Luther and St. Olaf wrapped up their four-game series this afternoon in the valley splitting the double header. The Norse won game one 4-3 in eight innings and the Oles won game two 10-1. With the split the Norse are now 6-4 overall and the Oles finished the weekend with a mark of 4-4.
Game One: Luther 4, St. Olaf 3
Joshua Matanich hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs that secured the 4-3 victory. Matanich took the first pitch from Kieran Haaland over the right field fence. It was his first home run of the season. Matanich finished the game going 2-for-4 with two rbi.
Cullen Stamp also had a solid offensive performance going 3-for-5 and also drove in two runs.
Ryan Manternach got the start and pitched six solid innings but did not get the decision. At one point, Manternach had retired 11 in a row, before giving up a two-run home run to Joey Glampe in the sixth that tied the game 3-3. Glampe hit a shot to right center field near the score board that hit the top of the fence and bounced over for the home run. Manternach faced 24 batters, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three in six innings of work.
Blake Jondle was credited with the win in relief. Jondle tossed the final two frames and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two.
Game Two: St. Olaf 10, Luther 1
Scheduled as a nine inning game originally, this game was moved to a seven inning game since game one went extra frames. The Oles scored in every inning except two, producing nine hits. Luther tallied just three hits and committed five errors that led to six unearned runs. Matanich had two of the three Norse hits increasing his season batting average to .512.
