DECORAH, Iowa - The Luther women's basketball team was defeated by Simpson 77-66 on Saturday. The Norse had four players reach double-digits including
Kailey Jones,
Kate Hosking,
Jordan Rubie, and
Chelin Isaacson. With the loss Luther is now 10-12 overall and 5-8 in the American Rivers Conference.
The Storm began the first half on a 9-2 run. A layup from Rubie at 5:36 started the Norse rally of eight straight points for their first lead of the game. After three more ties the quarter ended in with both teams tied at 15.
In the second quarter, the Storm surged to a ten point lead of 29-19 with 4:41 remaining until halftime.
Layken McGuire hit the layup on the next possession but the Simpson answered with a three on the other end. With 1:47 to go Luther roared back going on an 11-2 run to narrow Simpson's lead to two points. The Storm headed into the locker room with a 38-36 advantage. Jones was nearing her double-double with ten rebounds and eight points.
Back from the break,
Lizzie Kauls hit a pair of free throws that knotted the game up at 38. However, the Storm quickly drove up their lead back to nine in nearly two minutes. Luther slowly chipped into the lead cutting the lead to four off a
Haylie Strum jumper down 51-47. Then at 1:01 left in the third,
Isabel Herda drained the jumper that tied the game again this time at 51. Isaacson put the Norse up by two after her layup but the Storm answered with a three to end the quarter.
Hearda started the fourth with a the tying free throw and the she grabbed the offensive rebound and dished it to Hosking for three. As the Norse found themselves up 57-54. Once again the Storm returned with a three of their own. By midway through Simpson had a seven point advantage but at 4:39 Rubie hit a three that pulled the Norse within one at 66-67. The Strom scored the last 10 points of the game for the 77-66 victory.
Simpson is now 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the A-R-C.
TOP NORSE
- Hoking led the team with 14 points.
- Jones recorded a double-double with 15 rebounds and 12 points.
- Isaacson had ten points. She was one rebound shy of a double-double.
- Rubie also chipped in ten points.
