DECORAH, Iowa - The Luther women's basketball team is seeking their first win of the new year with a 76-69 loss to Central on Wednesday. The Dutch went on a 11-4 run to close out the fourth quarter.
Haylie Strum had a career high performance knocking down 20-points for the Norse. Luther is now 8-9 overall and 3-5 in the American Rivers Conference.
Kate Hosking hit a three to open the game as the Norse headed to an early 7-2 run. Central closed the gap tying it at 10 with 6:43 left in the first quarter. Later the Dutch would take their first lead of the game for a 16-15 advantage with 3:47. That lead was quickly erased by Luther as they went on a 6-0 run with buckets from
Lizzie Kauls, Strum and
Isabel Herda. At the end of the first the Norse held the 21-18 lead. Luther shot 50 percent from field and the arc.
In the second quarter, Central and Luther traded buckets going 8-7 in favor of the Norse. Then Central tied it at 30 then followed up with five point run. A three from
Jordan Rubie cut the lead to two and a Strum jumper tied it at 35 all. However, the Dutch would hold a 38-35 lead into the break.
Out of the locker room the Dutch were up by six at 7:56. Then Strum started the Norse on a 13-point run after hitting a three pointer to reclaim the lead. Central stayed within striking distance as the quarter neared it's end but Luther was up by three at 54-51.
The Norse were up by eight with 7:17 to go in the contest. The Dutch chipped away at the lead tying the game up at 61 midway through the quarter and went up by two at 4:46. Then 43 seconds later
Chelin Isaacson rallied the crowd with her steal and layup knotting the game at 63 all. Central responded with a jumper but a pair of free throws from
Kailey Jones tied it 65 with 2:44 remaining. However, the Dutch sealed the game on an 11-4 run.
Central is now 9-8 and 3-5 in the A-R-C.
In the contest Luther had stronger shooting numbers with 42.2 percent from the field, 42.1 from the arc and 77.8 at the line. The Norse also scored 26 points off turnovers.
