JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Luther volleyball team headed on its long road stretch to start the 2023 season starting with the Illinois College Tournament. The Norse dropped two matches falling in straight sets to host Illinois College (23-25, 18-25, 14-25) and Earlham College (12-25, 20-25, 21-25).
Match #1: Luther (0) vs Illinois College (3)
Volleyball is a game of momentum. The Norse and the Lady Blues traded points in the opening making it a tight game throughout. With both teams going on a string of points before the other would take the momentum right back. But a late push but the Lady Blues took the final points from the Norse leading to a 25-23 win.
In sets two and three Luther found bright spots with newcomer
Haley Gossman (Decorah, Iowa / Decorah) who finished the match with six kills and two blocks.
Sarina Stortz (Mabel, Minn. / Mabel-Canton) led the team with ten kills.
Emma Kowalczyk (Colgate, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) had 21 assists. For the defense
Karoline Tiu (Gilberts, Ill. / Hampshire) had seven digs. In the end the Norse fell to the Lady Blues 23-25, 18-25, 14-25.
Match #2: Luther (0) vs Earlham (3)
Luther was aiming to comeback in the second match of the day. But the Quakers dominated the opening set taking the 20-12 win.
The Norse rebounded in set two keeping pace with the Quakers midway through the set. Luther went on a mini run that included two service aces from
Kyah Olson-Sola (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield). But Earlham wasn't going away quietly going on a run of their own by taking set two 25-20.
Set three saw a similar pattern to the second set where both teams had opportunity and runs. However, it was Earlham who would come out on top taking the set 25-21. Stortz had 11 kills off of 16 attempts for a .688 hitting percentage leading the hitters.
TOP NORSE
- Sarina Stortz (Mabel, Minn. / Mabel-Canton) tallied 21 kills on 38 attempts and just three hitting errors over the two matches.
