Game Recap: Baseball |

Luther beats Coe, but ends A-R-C Tournament with loss to Dubuque

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – It was win or go home for the Luther Baseball team on day two of the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Tournament. Although the Norse would have to win two games to get to play on Saturday. They defeated Coe by 4-1 and then they fell to Dubuque in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. Nick Dufoe pitched a compete game in route to the victory over Coe and Mark Prince got the Norse back in the game against the Spartans.

GAME 1: NORSE (4), KOHAWKS (1)
After two scoreless innings, Coe in the top of the third went up by one but Nick Dufoe (Adel, Iowa / Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) and the Norse got out of the mess with no further damage. There was still a lot of game left to go before this one was over.

Moving to the bottom of the fourth, Cullen Stamp (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) reached first on a Kohawk error. Joshua Matanich (Lake City, Minn. / Lincoln) got the first hit of the day with a single as Stamp used his speed to move to third. Matanich got over to second on the passed ball putting runners threatening to tie the game. Gabe Atkins (Castle Pines, Colo. / Rock Canyon) hit the sac fly that got the game knotted up at one.

Then in the following inning, Luther added another lone run. Noah Sebben (Moline, Ill. / Moline) walked then moved to second on the sac bunt by Will Heithoff (Winterset, Iowa / Winterset). Then it was Stamp who singled into left center field for the RBI that gave the Norse the 2-1 lead.

Luther kept finding ways to add runs to their total in the seventh. Mark Prince (Encinitas, Calif. / La Costa Canyon) was on base already after being hit by pitch. Then Sebben and Heithoff reached on back-to-back errors by Coe. Prince came around home to score one run on the first error. With one out, Stamp flied out earning an RBI, to put the score at 4-1 with Luther in charge going into the final two innings of play.

Nick Dufoe pitched a complete game where he gave up eight hits, one run with three strikeouts. He forced the Kohawks batters to hit into five force outs and 17 ground outs. His season record improves to 4-3. Luther gets the job done by a final of 4-1 to stay alive in the tournament.

GAME 2: NORSE (2), SPARTANS (3)
The Spartans scored the opening run of the game. It would stay that way through four innings of goose eggs. In the top of the sixth Dubuque snagged two more to make it 3-0. Luther had work to do but it could be done and it all came down to the final at bat for the home team.

Down to their last three outs and two outs already on the Norse. Aiden Michna (Moline, Ill. / Moline) single to get aboard. Then next hitter, Mark Prince smashed a two-run home-run out in left field to pull within one. Dubuque switched their pitchers giving Luther batters time to strategize. Then Atkins followed up with single up the middle putting the tying run at the plate. However, the Spartans got the final out they needed to close the game. Luther did their best to get the walk-off win but it wasn't in the cards. The Norse are now 25-18 overall on the season and bow out of the 2023 A-R-C Tournament.
