TUCSON, Az. – The Luther baseball played in their highest scoring games of the season with the 19-14 win over Wesleyan. Both teams combined for 33 runs and 30 hits with just one error in the entire game.
Aiden Michna (Moline, Ill. / Moline) recorded six hits including three doubles, one triple and a home run for two runs and 10 total RBIs.
Noah Sebben (Moline, Ill. / Moline) also had a big day with four runs, four hits seven RBIs and two home runs. Luther improves to 7-7 on the season with one final game in Arizona before conference play.
HITS, HITS AND MORE HITS
It was a big day for the bats in the second to last game in Arizona for Luther. It all started with
Aiden Michna and his RBI single into left field to get the Norse on the board first. But by the time the second at bat for the Cardinals came up they would pile on four runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Top of the third Luther bounced back with four runs of their own with a two-run home run from
Noah Sebben. The Norse continued with two back-to-back triples from
Charlie Rubendall (Monticello, Iowa / Monticello) and Michna. Then
Joshua Matanich (Lake City, Minn. / Lincoln) hit a sac fly to bring home Michna for the RBI. By the end of the half inning Luther was back in charge of the lead 5-4.
Following inning and down two outs with bases loaded Michna hit the ball deep into left field clearing the bases with his triple to earn another three RBIs on the day. However, Wesleyan would take back the lead for the second time in the game with a five run in the fifth to lead 9-8 over Luther.
The Norse were just about to have their biggest inning of the season in the sixth. Sebben kicked off the inning with a two-run home run for his second of the game. Rubendall continued the hit streak with his double and then Michna launched a two-run home run into center field. And a walk issued to
Mark Prince earned another run for Luther. Sebben got a second at bat in the inning and his single to left brought in two runners. Later with the bases full Michna hit a double into left field which brought in another three runs. Leaving the Norse with a ten-run lead at 19-9.
The nineteenth and final run of the game for Luther came in the top of the seventh in a bases loaded situation. Sebben sacrificed his body earning a hit by pitch to record his tenth RBI. The Cardinals tried to close the gap by adding a run in the seventh and eighth along with a. three run bottom of the ninth. But the Norse closed down the comeback earning the gritty win 19-14.
