ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Luther baseball team fell 3-2 in the first game of the series with WashU. The Norse scored two runs in their first at bat before the Bears would get the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Luther drops to 4-4 on the season.
ONE RUN IS ALL IT TAKES
It was a chilly, overcast day in St. Louis for game one of the three game series with the Bears. With
Peyton Lindmark (Bettendorf, Iowa / Pleasant Valley) on base,
Cullen Stamp (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) ripped the ball down the leftfield line for a double, putting runners in scoring position.
Noah Sebben (Moline, Ill. / Moline) grounded out and brought home Linmark for the first run of the game earning him an RBI. With two outs
Gabe Atkins (Castle Pines, Colo. / Rock Canyon) drove in the second run and reached on an error to first. That was all the Norse would get in the half inning but it was a good jump start by taking advantage of the errors by the Bears.
The Norse defense caught a WashU runner stealing on a perfect throw from
Jack Welch (La Crescent, Minn. / LaCrescent) to Lindmark at second. And pitcher
Ryan Manternach (Monticello, Iowa / Monticello) threw flawlessly into what would become a pitcher's duel.
After Manternach exited the game in the sixth, the Bears took advantage of the new pitcher coming in for Luther scoring three runs for their first lead of the day. But the Norse didn't let the damage get any worse to get out of the inning.
Luther had chances to get the go ahead run in the seventh but even with the bases loaded the Bears got out of the jam. Then in the last at bat the Norse once again had runners on base but a one handed catch by the Bears defense sealed the 3-2 victory.
