Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Luther streak snapped by Wartburg

DECORAH, Iowa – The saying goes that all good things must come to an end. Sadly, that adage came true for the Luther College men's basketball team Wednesday evening. Despite a hard fought battle, the Norse saw their three-game win streak snapped Wednesday night, falling to Wartburg College by a final score of 66-50. With the loss, Luther's record now stands at 6-14 overall and the team is 3-9 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play.

BY THE NUMBERS
Luther got off on the wrong foot in Waverly, Iowa, as Wartburg cruised to an early 20-2 lead just eight minutes into the game. However, in the closing 12 minutes, the Norse put in the work to erase the deficit, closing the half on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 23-12. Luther's defense truly stepped up, holding the Knights to a .250 shooting percentage in the first half, including a .167 mark from three point range. Additionally, the Norse did not allow a single Wartburg player to score in double-digits, as the game's leading scorer, Jack Molstead, managed just seven points in the opening 10 minutes of play.

Still, Luther needed to generate offense if the team hoped to extend its win streak to four points. The Norse did outscore themselves in the second half, as they scored 38 points thanks to .439 shooting from the floor. Unfortunately, the Knights also scored more points in the second half. Despite Luther's best effort on defense, Wartburg scored 43 points in the second half on .591 shooting.

Still, the Norse found themselves within striking distance a handful of times in the second half. With under nine minutes remaining in regulation, Mikkel Schutte (Houston, Minn. / Houston) pulled Luther with 10 at 42-32 and again kept Luther within striking distance to 44-34. In the end, the Norse couldn't catch the Knights, as a late scoring drought by Luther resulted in a 66-50 win for Wartburg.

TOP NORSE

  • Daniel Webster (Plano, Texas / St. Ignatius) tied both a season and career-high Wednesday night, as he scored a team-leading 15 points on 6-11 shooting, including a 3-5 mark from three-point range.
  • Mikkel Schutte (Houston, Minn. / Hosuton) recorded his first double-double of the season thanks to his 12 point and 10 rebound performance, while Aidan Bailey (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) added 11 points in the loss.
