Carthage Snaps Norse Win Streak

DECORAH, Iowa - The Luther women's basketball team saw their eight-game win streak come to an end on Saturday against Carthage College. The Firebirds scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Norse 62-58. Kailey Jones had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. With the loss Luther completes its non-conference schedule and falls to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the American Rivers Conference.

The Norse and Firebirds played a tight opening quarter as the score would tie three times. With 1:48 on the clock a layup from Kenlin Schmitt started the 7-3 run to close first quarter 13-11.

After two free throws from Jones to start the second quarter Carthage went on a 10-4 run to take a 21-19 lead. Luther responded with a 9-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead 28-21 with 2:50 left in the half. Carthage would slim the lead down but the free throw from Chelin Isaacson put the Norse up by five at the break leading 31-26.

The third quarter was a defensive battle which led to a low scoring affair but Luther edged Carthage 11-8. A minute into the fourth quarter a three from Kate Hosking put the Norse ahead 48-39 with 9:01 left in the contest. The Firebirds quickly erased the deficit taking over the lead 54-50 at 4:43. Then Luther recalimed the lead off a 5-0 run of their own. However, that lead would be short lived as Carthage closed the game on an 8-3 run.

Luther out rebounded Carthage 41-36. The Norse were successful in the paint scoring 24 points.
