Luther wrapped up its non-conference schedule hosting Lyon College, Batesville, Arkansas this afternoon in Carlson Stadium. The Scots, who are transitioning from the NAIA to the NCAA III, took advantage of Norse turnovers to secure a 28-21 victory.
Lyon scored the lone touchdown of the first quarter on its first possession of the game. The Scots were pinned on their own three-yard line, following a 35-yard punt by freshman quarterback
Grady Rose. The Scots responded with a 10-play 97-yard drive that ate up 5:29 of the clock.
Luther, who was 3-for-4 scoring touchdowns in the red zone, missed its first opportunity to tie the game, midway through the second frame. Facing third and goal from the one, the Norse fumbled and the ball was recovered in the end zone by the Scots.
On their very next possession, Norse Rose, reached the end zone on a seven-yard scamper with 4:30 remaining in the half, that leveled the score 7-7.
Lyon scored 21 unanswered points that gave it a 28-7 advantage entering the fourth quarter. On fourth and 10 on the Norse 28, Scots quarterback Kristopher Funck connected with Reginald Brown II for a touchdown with 56 seconds left in the first half. Two miscues by the Norse, a blocked punt and a fumble, set up the next two touchdowns, at 6:26 and 2:28 of the third quarter.
The Norse continued to battle and scored its final two touchdowns of the afternoon at 7:10 and with 20 seconds left in the fourth frame. Luther's second score was a 14-play, 96-yard drive that was capped off with a 10-yard run into the end zone by
Grant Carder. This was followed by an 11-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown reception by
Blake Storby.
Following the touchdown, the Norse recovered the on-side kickoff, and had one last chance to tie the game, but the attempted hook and ladder type play resulted in a fumble, that was recovered by the Scots on the Norse 27-yard line.
Rose, making only his third collegiate start calling signals, was 21-of-37 for 189 yards and also led the rushing attack with 69 yards on 22 carries. Rose connected with nine different receivers led by Storby with four catches for 47 yards.
Defensively,
