Two teams looking to post their first victory of the season squared off in front of a Homecoming crowd in Storm Lake this afternoon. In a game where the statistical battle was almost even, one play proved to be the difference for the Beavers who posted a 17-10 victory.
After 30 minutes of play, the score was tied 10-10. Both teams scored a touchdown and kicked a field goal. Luther scored at 9:01 of the first frame when
Beau Cornwell connected with
Samuel Zegler-Evans for a 10-yard touchdown pass. The score capped off an 11 play drive that covered 68 yards.Â
Buena Vista leveled the score following a 13-play, 84-yard drive that ended with a three-yard plunge into the end zone by Eman Alaniz early in the second quarter.Â
The Beavers took a 10-7 lead thanks to a 30-yard field goal by Matthew Beisswenger with 8:07 remaining in the half.Â
Luther responded with a 25-yard field goal by
Sean Medcalfe at the 1:33 mark. Medcalfe is now 3-for-4 with a long of 32 yards.Â
The only score in the second half was a 40-yard scamper by Alaniz late in the third quarter. Alaniz finished the game leading all rushers with 95 yards on 23 attempts.Â
With five minutes remaining in the game,
Thane Larson pinned the Beavers on their own one-yard line following a 45-yard punt. The Norse forced a three-and-out and had one more chance to tie the game, starting the drive on the Beavers 39-yard line with 2:34 left on the clock. That chance ended on the very first play, when Cornwell was picked off by the Beavers Trey Ortman, on the five-yard line.Â
Both teams finished with 247 yards of total offense. Luther ran 67 plays and Buena Vista ran 62.Â
Defensively,
Brayden Daly and
Tyler Ragan led all tacklers with 11 each.
Levi Wolter was next with seven.Â
