DECORAH, IOWA – The Luther women's soccer team defeated Central 4-1. Four different players scored for the Norse in the win including
Maggie Haller,
Sharla Hanson,
Gaby Caballero and
Sofia Biedermann. Luther is 5-5-4 overall and 2-2-1 in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C).
Central stuck first scoring in the 12
th minute. Luther set up the play from the midfield with
Sammie Sabin sending a cross towards goal. The Dutch goalie misjudged how the ball was going to bounce and
Maggie Haller was there to score the equalizer. That would be the halftime score with the two teams even up at 1-1.
The second half is where the Norse found their spark. Then in the 72
nd minute
Kaitlyn Bebensee crossed it in on the corner kick. The ball bounced off Haller towards
Sharla Hanson who scored her first career goal. It gave the Norse their first lead of the game.
Luther continued to press on Central.
Gaby Caballero missed a shot earlier but she'd finally burry one less than a minute later. Haller weaved through the box working towards the end line before she passed it to Caballero. And unlike the first time she didn't miss putting the Norse up 3-1 in the 76
th minute.
Later in the 81
st minute the Norse were called for a foul in the box leading to a Dutch penalty kick. The Central player stepped to the spot but
Ken Vavrichek stood strong making the save. The ball was still loose and the Dutch player took a second shot but Vavrichek saved it again.
The final goal came in the 83
rd minute with Caballero passing it off to
Sofia Biedermann. For Biedermann it is her first collegiate goal. The Norse defeated the Dutch 4-1.
It was a victory Luther needed heading into the final games of the regular season. With the win the Norse are 5-5-4 overall and 2-2-1 in A-R-C with 7 points.
