INDIANOLA, Iowa – Saturday did not go as planned for the Luther College women's basketball team. After an impressive upset over #19 Loras College on Wednesday, the Norse were hoping to extend their win streak with an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) win over Simpson College. A win was not in the cards for Luther. Despite outplaying and outsourcing the Storm in the first and third quarters, the Norse struggled with consistency, as they fell by a final score of 70-54. With the loss, Luther's overall record is now 9-6 and the team is 4-2 in A-R-C play.
BY THE NUMBERS
It was off to the races when Luther took the court in Indianola, Iowa, as the two teams scored a combined 38 points in the opening quarter. Kate Hosking (Slinger, Wis. / Slinger) led the Norse scoring efforts in the first quarter, scoring eight of the team's 18 points. Simpson scored 20 first quarter points, putting Luther in a manageable 20-18 deficit after the first quarter of play.
The deficit got a bit less manageable in the second quarter, as the Norse scored just seven points against the Storm's stingy defense. Simpson, meanwhile, put up 25 points in the second quarter alone, cruising to a 45-25 lead after the first half. The Storm did their best to neutralize Luther's top scoring threats, Lizzie Kauls (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View) and Kiley Jones (Avoca, Iowa / AHSTW), allowing the duo to score just four total points combined in the first half.
The Norse seemingly turned the tides in the third, as they opened the quarter on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 47-37. In fact, Luther outscored Simpson 21-7 in the third quarter, closing the gap to 52-46 entering the fourth and final quarter. Unfortunately for the Norse, they were hit by another scoring drought in the fourth quarter. Despite having all the momentum, Luther was outscored 18-8 in the final quarter, resulting in a 70-54 win for Simpson.
