Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Norse speared by Spartans 71-59

DUBUQUE, Iowa  – The road has not been kind to the Luther College women's basketball team as of late. After winning six road games in the first half of 2022-23, the Norse have dropped their last two, this time falling to the University of Dubuque in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play. Despite a strong second half, in which Luther outscored the Spartans 35-28, the Norse were unable to leave Dubuque, Iowa with a victory, falling by final score of 71-59. With the loss, Luther's overall record is now 10-7 and the team is 5-3 in A-R-C play.

BY THE NUMBERS
Luther struggled offensively to open the contest, as Dubuque's press gave the Norse all sorts of trouble. In the opening five minutes, Luther managed just two points on the Spartans stingy defense, while Dubuque had no issues making baskets. After the first quarter, the Spartans led 24-9, putting the Norse in a double-digit deficit early. The second quarter, though, was a different story. After struggling with Dubuque's zone press in the first quarter, the Norse seemingly cracked the code in the second, as they opened on a 5-2 run featuring Chelin Isaacson (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Monarch) and Grace Prokosch (Oakdale, Minn. / Hill-Murray). Luther eventually whittled the lead to 36-24 with two minutes remaining in the half, using three free throws from Kate Hosking (Slinger, Wis. / Slinger) to cut the lead to 12.

No one scored points for the opening two minutes of the third quarter, but it was Dubuque that broke through first. The Spartans eventually scored the first basket of the second half with 7:53 remaining, though  the Norse would go on to win the third quarter. Thanks to scoring barrages from Kailey Jones (Avoca, Iowa / AHSTW), Jordan Rubie (Winona, Minn. / Cotter) and Layken McGuire (Danvers, Ill. / Lexington), Luther outscored Dubuque 18-15 in the third quarter. However, it still wasn't enough to push the Norse to victory. At the end of all things, Luther was unable to overcome its first half struggles, falling by final score of 71-59.

  • Jordan Rubie (Winona, Minn. / Cotter) was the final student-athlete to score in double-digits, adding 10 points.
