Maggie Haller Nets Two in Victory Over St. Catherine

Luther wins home opener

DECORAH, IOWA – Luther got a big win over St. Kate's with two goals from Maggie Haller with one coming in each half. This is the first win of the season in just their second game of the regular season on what turned out to be a beautiful night in the valley.

SECOND CHANCES
In just their second game of the season the Norse found a way to get ahead of St. Kate's. And although the Wildcats had received votes in the August 2 preseason poll from United Soccer Coaches of 2022 that didn't phase the Norse one bit. In the opening minutes both teams were looking to settle into the match. Kaitlyn Bebensee (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) sent it towards the box as the Wildcats tried to clear it as Maggie Haller (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) took advantage. Shooting it with her right foot she put it away low into the right corner as the bench went wild in the 13th minute of play. The Norse took the 1-0 score line into the half.

Just seven minutes into the second half the Norse were attempting to clear it out of the box but it was Amanda Elton for the Wildcats who carved out space to slip the ball past goalkeeper Ken Vavrichek (Bloomington, Minn./The Blake School). With the game now tied at 1 in the 52nd minute it was anyone's game. Luther was persistent as Emma Lin (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) sent the ball in towards goal and after a few deflections it found the feet of Haller again for her second goal of the game. The goal came in the 63rd minute would be your game winner. This is the second win over the Wildcats in three all-time meetings.

TOP NORSE
  • Junior Maggie Haller (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) led the offense with four shots, two goals and picked up four points in the game.
  • Sophomore Ken Vavrichek (Bloomington, Minn./The Blake School) had seven saves on the night and only allowed one goal in his first start of the season.
  • Juniors Emma Lin (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) and Kaitlyn Bebensee (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) each tallied one assist.

QUOTE FROM COACH HOLLIE GRAY III
"I challenged the team to play with passion, joy, and leave the field with a peace of mind, and for 90 minutes they accepted, embraced, and exceeded the challenge. Now we rest and prepare for the challenge of the weekend."
