WAVERLY, Iowa – No one would describe the Luther College football team's start to the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) as easy. The Norse opened conference play against Wartburg College, A-R-C perennial power, and on the road to boot. Despite improved play, Luther was unable to leave Waverly, Iowa with a victory, falling to the Knights by a final score of 62-0. After Saturday's game, the Norse record now stands at 0-3 as they start the season 0-1 in A-R-C play.
BY THE NUMBERS
The image of David taking on Goliath was strong Saturday afternoon, as Luther took the field to face Wartburg in its first conference game of the season. While the Norse played well in the first quarter, the Knights were simply better, as they executed a near perfect game plan on both offense and defense to hold a 27-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
Down by a handful of scores, Luther tried to get something going offensively, taking more risks trying for big plays. While it paid off at times, the Norse were unable to cross into the end zone, as Wartburg's defense held Luther at bay throughout the game. While the Norse defense played valiantly, they eventually grew tired, resulting in a 55-0 halftime lead for the Knights.
Luther played an outstanding second half, as the team held Wartburg to just seven second half points after surrendering 55 in the opening 30 minutes of play. The Norse were never able to generate offense, though, despite their best attempts. Every time Luther seemingly got something going, the Knights defense was there to put a stop to it, resulting in a 62-0 victory for Wartburg.
