CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Luther College volleyball team opened the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) season on the road Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Cedar Rapids for its first conference match of the 2022 season. While the Norse battled with Coe College, they were unable to leave with a victory, falling to the Koehawks 3-0 (10-25, 10-25, 13-25). With the loss, Luther is now 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in A-R-C play.
MATCH SUMMARY
The Norse struggled to get anything going offensively in the first set, as the Coe's tough serving forced Luther out of system, eliminating any attack from the middle and right side. However, the Norse battled through the opening points, staying within striking distance of the Koehawks before dropping the first set 25-10.
Luther looked to get things going in the second set, but the team's struggles on serve receive persisted into the second set. The Norse also fell into an early 8-1 deficit from which they could never recover, falling behind 2-0 in the match after a 25-10 loss in the second.
Rather than shrivel down 2-0, Luther continued to battle in the third, forcing its host to earn every point of the set. In fact, the Norse held the lead in the early stages of set three using strong serves and kills from Aria Schleiker (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Air Academy) and Hannah LaBonte (Lake City, Minn. / Lincoln) to take an early 4-1 lead over the Koehawks. Even when Coe regained the lead, Luther was able to stay within four points, never letting the Koehawks truly gain the momentum. A late run and a bad rotation later, though, resulted in a 25-13 victory for Coe, allowing the Koehawks to take the match 3-0 (10-25, 10-25, 13-25).
TOP NORSE
- Sophomore middle blocker Hannah LaBonte (Lake City, Minn. / Lincoln) led Luther in kills, tallying five against Coe.
