Due to a weather forecast that show a 60% chance of rain later in the afternoon in Topeka, Kansas, Luther and Carthage started Sunday's twinbill an hour earlier and played two seven inning games. The Norse won game one 2-0 and the Firebirds won the nightcap 8-5.
In game one, the Norse manufactured runs in both the fourth and seventh innings. Defensively they turned double plays in the third and fourth frames, while
Nate Loch and Harrison Blum held the Firebirds to just three hits.
in the fourth,
Gavin Scurr reached on a error and advanced to second after
Cullen Stamp was hit-by-pitch. Scurr was able to score following a single by
Joshua Matanich, combined with an infield error by the Firebirds. Stamp started the seventh getting plunked for the second time. Matanich laid down a sac bunt to third that advanced Stamp to second.
Joe Jersak hit a single that scored Stamp.
Loch threw the first two innings and allowed just one hit and walked one. Blum (2-0) was credited with the win allowing just two hits and striking out two in five innings of work. He faced 16 batters and at one point he retired nine in a row.
In game two, Carthage broke open a 3-3 tie scoring five runs in the top of the seventh. Luther answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame after scoring a run in each of the first three innings.
Scurr continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-4 with two rbi. Jersak drove in a run in the second. Both of Luther's runs in the seventh were the result of a wild pitch with runners on second and third.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 5-1. Carthage improved to 3-4.
Luther is scheduled to return to action Saturday and Sunday, March 12 when it will host St. Mary's University (MN) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Mount Mercy University. Saturday's double header is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's game will begin at Noon.
