Luther hosted Loras College for the conference opener for both teams. The Duhawks entered the game with a mark of 16-0 and ranked No. 15 by d3baseball.com. With the temperature in the low 40's and wind gusts of up to 30 mph, combined with snow showers, added extra difficulty for pitchers and fielders throughout the afternoon.
The Norse combined for 10 hits and defeated the Duhawks 11-1 in seven innings.
Luther posted two runs in the first thanks to back-to-back doubles by
Cullen Stamp and
Luke Plunkett, and a single by
Charlie Rubendall. The Duhawks score one in the top of the fourth as the snow began to come down a bit more steady. In the bottom half of the frame, Rubendall was hit by a pitch, that was followed with a two-run blast over the left-center field fence by
Gavin Scurr, that fans were not able to see carry the fence because of a heavy flurry of snow.
Following the Scurr blast, the game was suspended for 1:20 minutes. The sun came out, play was resumed at 5:07 p.m., and the teams were able to complete the game.
Luther added two more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run by
Charlie Rubendall.
In the sixth, the Norse scored six runs capped off with a grand slam over the left field fence by
Luke Plunkett. Plunkett finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with five rbi and scoring three times.
Ryan Manternach (3-0) returned to the mound following the delay and completed the fifth inning to secure the win. Manternach allowed one run of four hits, walked one and struckout two.
Collin Chalmers took over in the fifth and retired all six batters he faced.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 8-5.
These two teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday, March 27 with a double header that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
