Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Norse fall to Gusties 84-50

DECORAH, Iowa  – It was not the ringing in of the New Year the Luther College women's basketball team was looking for. The Norse were hoping to close 2022 with a nonconference win over Gustavus Adolphus College. Unfortunately, that was not in the cards for Luther, as the Norse fell by a final score of 84-50. With the loss, Luther's overall record stands at 8-5 and the team is 3-1 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Norse offense got off to a slow start in the first quarter, as Luther scored just two points on the Gusties stingy defense in the first four minutes of play. Gustavus did not experience the same offensive struggles, as the visitors raced out to a 9-2 lead before extending it to 11-4 by the six minute mark. The Norse whittled the lead to 11-7, but they had no answer for Gustavus' Emma Kniefel. For every basket Luther scored, Kniefel seemingly had an answer, extending the Gusties lead to 17-9 with 3:51 remaining in the first.

The third minute was a completely different game for the Norse, as they completely turned the tides on Gustavus. Fueled by a seven point run from Emillee Burcham-Scofield (Menominie, Wis. / Colfax), Luther managed to cut the Gusties lead to 20-14 and eventually whittled it to 20-17 with two minutes to go. However, Gustavus ended the quarter with a 5-0 run, closing the first with a 25-17 lead.

The Norse hung with the Gusties in the second quarter, but another late run resulted in a 44-28 halftime lead for the visitors. While Luther tried to make up the deficit in the second half, the 16 point deficit was too much to overcome. Shots were hard to come by for the Norse in the third quarter, as Luther scored 22 points in the third and fourth quarter combined with a majority of the offense coming from junior Jordan Rubie (Winona, Minn. / Cotter). Despite valiant efforts, the Norse were never able to catch Gustavus, as the visitors won by a final score of 84-50.

  • Lizzie Kauls (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View) led the team with five rebounds.
