Football falls in final road game of 2022

PELLA, Iowa  – The Luther College football team had one final business trip on its schedule for 2022. The Norse played Central College on Saturday in what will be the team's final road game of the 2022 season. Luther put together a strong offensive game plan, scoring 13 first half points against the mighty Dutch, but the Norse were unable to leave Pella with a win, falling by a final score of 61-13. With the loss, Luther's overall record is 1-8 and the team is 1-6 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Norse found themselves in a 14-0 deficit after the first quarter despite a well played half by both the offense and defense. After giving up a touchdown on the first drive of the game, Luther's defense settled into the game nicely, forcing two Dutch punts and a turnover on downs. The Norse were unable to capitalize on their offensive chances, as they were unable to penetrate Central's defense in the first quarter. Beau Cornwell (Iowa City, Iowa / West Branch) and the Luther offense eventually cracked the Dutch defensive code, as the Norse scored their first touchdown of the day at 5:40 in the second, when Cornwell found Andre Atkins (East Palo Alto, Calif. / Junipero Serra) for a 21-yard touchdown reception. Luther scored its second touchdown minutes later, as Cornwell again found Atkins, this time for 17-yards and another touchdown reception.

Unfortunately, Central had no issues finding the end zone in the second quarter as well, as the Dutch put up 33 second quarter points to hold a 47-13 lead over the Norse at halftime. Central would only score 14 points in the second half, but Luther was unable to catch the Dutch despite an explosive offensive performance. As a team, Luther won the first down battle, tallying 22 total in comparison to Central's 21. The Norse also tallied 400 yards of total offense on 92 plays with a 259/141 split between air and rush yards. Luther, though, found the end zone just two times compared to the six Dutch touchdowns, resulting in the 61-13 Central victory.

  • Brayden Daly (Gilbert, Ariz./ Mesquite)  led the team with 10 tackles Saturday afternoon, while Aydan Holub-Schultz  (Mount Union, Iowa / Mount Union) added eight.
