The University of Dubuque's Joel Skog-Johansson scored goals at 38:06 and 84:49 leading the Spartans to a 2-0 victory over the Norse tonight in Dubuque. With the victory, the Spartans (7-0) secured at least a share of the American Rivers Conference championship and the No. 1 seed for the six-team conference tournament.
Luther (4-1-2) remains in second place in the league standings with 14 points with one match remaining on its league schedule. The Norse will host Wartburg College (4-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 26 in what could be a must win situation for the Norse to secure the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament. Wartburg has 12 points and faces Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 23. Each victory is worth three points and a tie is worth one point.
Tonight, the Spartans applied pressure on the Norse nets the entire evening getting off 22 shots and placing 11 on goal.
Carson Davenport was credited with six saves in the first half and five in the second.
On the flip side, Luther was credited with five shots and placed one inside the frame.
The final seeds for the A-R-C Conference Tournament will all be decided following the results of the matches on Saturday, Oct. 23 and Tuesday, Oct. 26. The top-two seeds will earn first round a bye. There are two first-round games Saturday, Oct. 30, followed by the semis Wednesday, Nov. 3. The championship match is set for two weeks from this Saturday, Nov. 6. The tournament winner gets the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
