The Luther College Homecoming crowd watched a very good college football game this afternoon. Unfortunately for Norse fans, a 44-yard touchdown pass from Carter Terry to David O'Connell with 2:12 left on the clock, proved to be the game winner, as Nebraska Wesleyan University defeated the Norse 28-21.
Early in the fourth frame,
Vershon Brooks punched a seven-yard run into the end zone, that capped off a 10-play, 51-yard drive and gave the Norse a 21-14 advantage. The drive was set up thanks to an interception on the Norse 49-yard line by
Brandon Deas, his second of the game.
Nebraska Wesleyan answered with a nine-yard pass from Terry to Matthew Zarybnicky two minutes later to tie the game 21-21.
Luther had a season best 409 yards of total offense, with 272 coming on the ground. Brooks had a huge afternoon rushing for 233 yards on 32 carries. His first touchdown of the game was 90 yards, that tied the game 7-7 with 8:34 left in the second quarter. Brooks was also credited with 21 receiving yards and 51 return yards for a total of 305 all-purpose yards.
Michael Lorento, who threw for 137 yards and one touchdown. He connected with
Andre Atkins on a five-yard pass to the corner of the end zone with 21 ticks left on the clock, that gave Luther a 14-7 halftime lead. Atkins finished the game with six receptions for 80 yards.
The Prairie Wolves tied the game early in the third frame (14-14) thanks to a 61-yard fumble recovery returned to the Norse end zone by Max Briniker.
Sam Bundy and
Levi Wolter led the Norse defensive unit with nine tackles each. Wolter was also credited with two sacks.
Jeremy Whalen has seven tackles, while both
Dakota Wright and
Aydan Holub-Schultz had five each. Holub-Schultz also had an interception.
The loss gives Luther a league record of 0-3, 0-5 overall. Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in league play.
One week from today, Luther travels to Simpson College for a game that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
