Offense was the named of the game this afternoon in Indianola as Luther and Simpson faced each other and both teams looking for their first wins of the season. Simpson defeated Luther 68-34. The 102 combined points was the second highest total for combined points for the 81-year old series dating back to 1924. The record is 105 points set in 1998, a game that Simpson won 76-29.
The two teams also combined for 1,121 yards of total offense. Simpson racked up 656 yards averaging 10.1 yards per play, while Luther had 465 yards for an average of 5.6 yards per play.
Simpson led 47-7 at halftime. Both teams scored a touchdown in the third frame and Luther outscored the Storm 20-14 in the fourth.
Vershon Brooks had another big day carrying the football. Brooks carried the football 23 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on runs of 66 and 33 yards. Brooks has now rushed for 608 yards in six games and reached the end zone five times. Brooks also was credited with 38 yards in kick-off returns and 22 receiving yards for an all-purpose total of 206. He now has 1,177 all-purpose yards for the season.
Avant Porter rushed for 65 yards and scored on runs of 18 and and one, both in the fourth frame.
Cody Hocker got the start at quarterback due to the injury to Micahel Lorento, and was 16-of-25 for 169 yards and one touchdown. He connected on a 70-yard strike to
Andre Atkins early in the fourth quarter. Atkins finished the afternoon with a game best eight catches for 133 yards. Atkins touchdown reception was his fourth of the year and moved him into the fourth slot all-time for career touchdown passes with 13.
Sam Bundy led the Norse defensive efforts with nine tackles. He was followed by
Levi Wolter with six.
Brandon Deas,
Zach Olson and Chris Pinkey all had five.
Next week, Luther returns home to host Wartburg College. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
