The 2025-26 campaign will be Steve's 20th year at Luther and seventh as Director of Men's Cross Country. He is also the assistant coach for distance for men's and women's track and field.Â
During his cross country tenure, Steve has led the Norse to five cross country conference championships and was named Conference Coach of the Year (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). He has also led the Norse to the NCAA III National Championships placing 6th in 2006, 8th in 2007, 26th in 2010, 24th in 2012, and 14th in 2013.
His athletes have earned a combined seven All-American honors, 39 all-region honors, 59 all-conference honors and two were named conference MVP's.
Five years ago, Steve was named the head coach of men's track and field, a program that has won 26 conference titles, has produced 39 outdoor All-Americans, 14 indoor All-Americans and a combined 431 indoor and outdoor all-conference performers.
Prior to joining the Norse staff, Steve spent two years as an assistant coach at Williams College (MA), where the women's cross country team won the national championship in 2004 and the men's team finished in the top-10 in 2003 and 2004. From 2000-2002 he was the Head Men's Coach of cross country at Macalester College (MN).Â
Steve is a 1997 graduate of St. John's University and went on and earned a masters degree in 1999 from the University of Iowa in Exercise Physiology. While at St. John's he ran both cross country and track and earned all-conference honors in track in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.
